Gamine Eve

imagesEve was confused when Satan asked her in Genesis 3:1: “has God indeed said, ‘you shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” (Doesn’t he do that to us? “God doesn’t want you to have any fun;” “Christians aren’t allowed to do anything.”)

Eve and her husband were only forbidden to eat of one of the many wonderful trees. God had blessed them abundantly with more than they could ever need or want, but He put one extra tree there in order to give them the opportunity to prove their love for Him by respecting His boundaries.

If they had no choice to disobey Him, then their relationship would have been a forced one. God wanted their love, proved by obedience, not just the company of two “robots” with no other option but to do as they were told.

Eve must have had a bit of the Gamine Img.ID in her because she wasn’t afraid to correct Satan on this; she told him that God permitted them to eat from all the other trees.

And the woman said to the serpent, “we may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘you shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.” Genesis 3:2 3

Gamines have a passion for justice. If they see something broken they fix it, and they don’t ask permission to do so. They are quick on their feet and full of ambition. Not much intimidates them and they don’t understand when others hold back. I imagine Eve was like that.

She quickly accepted the seed of doubt, and she was thinking about her enemy’s words maybe God was holding out on her. Then the sly one threw the big seed at her: “If you eat of that tree you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Unfortunately, being quick on our feet is not always a good quality. Eve, like a lot of Gamines, formed an assumption about the goodness of God before really thinking through the facts.

Think about that.

First of all, Adam and Eve were already like God! … And second of all, they already knew good, so really what Satan was offering them was the opportunity to know evil. What a snake!
