How to do a Wardrobe Weeding

Of all the outfits you wore last week, which one made you feel most confident and why?

If you followed my closet audit advice and picked out your favorite clothing items, did you notice any common traits between them? The color, pattern, fabric–what makes you feel good in what you wear? Is it the high-fashion statement pieces? Or do the comfortable jeans and simple tank tops give you the freedom to BE and LET BE? Do you tend to wear the same old tried and true outfits because you know how to accessorize them? Or did you struggle to complete an outfit at all?

Wherever your answers, I am excited to guide you in building a confident closet! I hope you used a pencil when filling in your worksheet last week, because now I am going to suggest that you erase any pieces of clothing in your chart that did not fit, flatter or make you feel confident.

And then remove them from your home.

This week’s goal is to weed out anything you wear that causes any kind of confidence conflict–slacks that ride up, blouses that slide down, sweatshirts that make you feel frumpy, T-shirts that make you grumpy. Anything that brings back bad memories or insecurities needs to go. Don’t start another day dressed to be stressed!

First, remove anything that could obstruct you from weeding out your wardrobe. An ironing board that blocks the door? Find another place for it. Laundry piled up again? Put it in the wash.

While the machine is washing, go through one drawer at a time and get rid of irrational or undesirable clothing that you dread wearing. One sox discolored? Get rid of them both! Why let such a simple thing hinder you from making choices in the morning. Weed out your hanging clothes, your shoes and accessories in the same way. Put any item that drains your energy or makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious  into one of three piles: give away, throw away or lay away (see this week’s worksheet for more details). Then go finish that laundry, pull out items that you didn’t feel confident wearing and hang up what is left on all those empty hangers. Don’t worry, we will rebuild your closet next week, but for now enjoy the simplicity of knowing that sometimes less is more.
