New Year, New You

Ready? Set? Go!

Happy New Year!

Don’t you just love the opportunity to start over? Today we  get ready to celebrate the closing of 2014. I’m sure your year, like ours, was full of devastations and dreams come true. Life is full of ups and downs and, undoubtably, next year’s race will have many mountains and valleys as well. The question is: how will we handle it?

Consider a runner tripping off the starting block. To be “ready” she must be “set” but what does that mean to those of us running the race of life, which often feels more like the post-game workout in the movie Miracle.

2013,  AGAIN!

2014, AGAIN!

2015, AGAIN!

For you, this may mean taking New Years Day off and setting some goals for what you want to accomplish in the next year. Finances, vacations, achievements. January first is a great day to throw away the old calendar and start a fresh, clean one with habits that will make all our dreams come true.

But for many of us, goal setting is getting old. We are tired of setting ourselves up for strenuous activity that all too often sucks the life out of us before we reach the finish line. There has got to be a better way.

I think it’s the starting block.

Last year I accomplished one of my biggest dreams. My book was launched by a New York publisher.  But like the 1980 Olympic ice hockey team, who needed a new perspective on what they had accomplished as individuals, I, too, had to figure out my new place in life. Marketing was my Herb Brooks: social media! book signings! blogs! AGAIN!

Sometimes we look at our accomplishments as the finish line. I did it! I made the team! And continuing to play the game begins to feel like “suicides” because we aren’t looking at our new role as the next race. In our pride, we forget our purpose and loose our passion.

If you are struggling to find yourself in the busyness of life, I encourage you to take a moment to catch your breath and remember who you are and who you play for. Perhaps it’s time to let the old team become the new starting block.

SMO BUTTERFLY1Remember, just when the caterpillar thought her world was over, she became a butterfly. My hope and prayer for 2015 is that this is the year that you and I truly break free and become who we were meant to BE.
