Shop Like a Man: Guilt-Free

Sales-tax-holiday-shopping-600x401I did it again!

I forgot to buy cereal, yet there I was trying to make the room for all the other groceries I didn’t need. I suppose I could get up early and make my kids eggs in the morning since now I have over two dozen!

Anyone with any knowledge of budgeting knows that shopping while your hungry is foolish–especially if you are hypoglycemic and get really confused when your blood sugars are low. Well, obviously I missed the Finance 101 course, because once again I have plenty of food but I’m not sure I can put together enough meals for the week because I let my cravings direct my purchases instead of my menu.

Some women shop for clothes while “hungry,” which will also blow the budget.

Can you relate? Have you ever bought shoes you simply had to have even though you had no idea what you would wear them with? Spontaneous, unplanned shopping of any kind can be very wasteful. Many women have plenty of clothes hanging in their closet with the tags still on them yet they cannot put enough outfits together for the week. Here’s the worst part: the guilt.

Well, it’s time to shed the shame and start shopping like a man!

Like grocery shopping, if you know what you need, you can shop like a man (find it, grab it, bring it home) and feel no guilt for spending money on yourself (like a man!) because it was planned, and it won’t get waisted. Think about this: What do you do when you run out of milk? You put “milk” on your grocery list, right? Then, when you have the time to shop, you look for milk, you put it in your cart and you don’t feel bad spending money on something you need. What about when you need a white blouse to replace an old one, do you write that down on a list? Wardrobe 101 says you should. Then when the budget allows, you hunt for what you need (not what your craving), buy it and bring it home to wear with confidence.

And when your husband questions your purchase, you don’t have to stutter and say, “This old thing?” Instead tell him, “Oh, yes, I needed it, so I bought it and I feel good wearing it. Thank you for noticing.”
