Worried about What to Wear?

Don't worry, be confidentPeople change. We change our size, weight, careers and opinions all the time. Why, then, is it so difficult to change our wardrobe? We don’t mind adding to  what we have but we are not nearly as eager to get rid of anything extra. We complain that we do not have all that we need but seldom do we recognize when we have too much.

Perhaps it’s our longing for more that gives us the lack of contentment. I’m all for shopping for new outfits, but we need to be careful not to let it make us stressed-out. Like grocery shopping while hungry and without a list, clothing shopping without a plan can be dangerous. Men may shop like they are hunting, but we women shop emotionally; we can easily end up with chaotic and crowded closets (or cupboards) full of items that are un-functional and incomplete.

It happens. A lot.

And then when it’s time for a wardrobe weeding, we would rather have teeth pulled! Why? Because we have grown attached to our clothing–even the poor choices. Think about it. Why don’t you like to get rid of your extras?

  • You haven’t worn it yet.
  • You plan to loose/gain weight and wear it again.
  • You have really good memories attached to it.
  • You love it and plan to find something that will go with it one day.
  • You intend to alter it.
  • You insist you will wear it when you finally find time to iron/sew it.

Really, it all comes down to worry, don’t you think? We don’t want to let go because we worry we will:

  • waste our hard-earned money
  • give up on our plan
  • forget a certain time in our lives
  • never be able to replace the item
  • seem ungrateful or un-resourceful

Granted, there are times when busyness is really the problem, but even then it is, it’s usually worry that drove our lives out of balance.

If your closet is crowded and chaotic and you are ready to start weeding, I encourage you to let go of worry and trust God.

Matthew 6:27-34 NKJV
Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
