Confidence

confidence |ˈkänfədəns; -fəˌdens|

noun

  • the state of feeling certain about the truth of something
  • the telling of private matters or secrets with mutual trust

I believe that confidence is knowing who you are. This is why I titled my book of image guidelines: Know Who You Are and it’s why I call my ministry: Confident Beauty. The thing is, confidence is not easily attained. While there may be some things, like gravity, that we never loose confidence in; getting to that state of feeling certain about ourselves is usually an ebb and flow experience. Sometimes we are simply unsure of who we are.

It seems that the more we step out in faith to become somebody, the more our confidence is challenged; and too easily it is defeated. Sadly, it only takes one word, or a simple glance from the person’s whose approval we wish we had, and our self-assurance is squelched. Why is that?

Perhaps the secret of our internal turmoil is found in the second definition.

There is another kind of confidence that’s found in telling one another private matters and trusting our secrets are safe, which is something that often builds deep relationships. But too often we put our confidence in the words spoken by those whom we should not be trusting.  Too often we allow other people’s opinion of our abilities, ideas or image to keep us from becoming who we were called to be.

God help us to put our trust in You and Your Word, and to stand strong in trusting we are who You say we are.
