Is your Clothes Closet like your Kitchen?

It’s part of every woman’s innate nature to desire beauty. Creating beauty, on the other hand, is not necessarily every woman’s forte.

Every woman likes eating, too, but not all of us like to cook!

Personally, I could go either way on when it comes to cooking. I like creating a meal for my family to enjoy, as long as I’m not too hungry to think and I have all the ingredients on hand to cook with. I love to go out to eat, too. It’s wonderful to have someone else create a scrumptious meal and place it right in front of me all prepared. At a restaurant they even do the clean up!

Creating an outfit is a lot like cooking.

Just as we need to eat, we also need to get dressed every day. But, like trying to cook a great meal without all the necessary ingredients, or like going to a restaurant that has a book for a menu when your too tiered to choose what you want to eat, coming up with what to wear each morning can be a frustrating start to the day.

Have you ever had your mind set on satisfying a certain craving while you stared down a menu full of options that looked unappealing? There could be an amazing list of wonderful meals, but if it’s not describing what you desire, it’s like reading gibberish.

If your craving steak, don’t go to a bakery.

IMG_1750 We may not have control of what’s on the menu at a restaurant, but we can take control of what we stock our cabinets and closets with. I recently did a complete clean out of my kitchen. I was amazed at how many packaged foods I had that were well past their expiration date! I literally threw away an entire garbage bag of old condiments, canned goods, baking powder, etc. I also filled a box of good food that I’m sure we won’t eat and sent it to a local food bank.

Less is more

It seems that a closet full of plenty of clothes would make it easier to create a great look, right? But does a kitchen full of exotic, expired or undesirable foods make it easier to create a meal? Definitely not. I cannot even tell you how much more fun it is to plan a meal now that my cabinets are so well organized–and so much more scarce!

It has been my experience that most women feel stifled by their crowded closets and find great freedom from doing a wardrobe weeding.

Why hold onto items you can’t use or don’t like when someone else needs them?

Many of us were raised by a generation who endured the Great Depression. We were taught to hold on to things in case we lost everything, like they did. I have lost “everything” a few times in my life, and yet I survived–and not because I stocked up on food and clothing! God has replenished my loss and if I ever return to that place of need, I believe He will come through for me again. In the mean time, I choose to live in the moment. Which, when it comes to my kitchen or my closet, means only keeping or purchasing that which I need and like (not to be confused with need OR like, because–especially when it comes to clothes–there are plenty of things that I like but do not need or are not my style!).

How about you? Is your closet like your kitchen? Are either of them full of outdated, unwanted, unusable items? Or perhaps there are some exotic ingredients that you bought for a one-time meal (or a formal outfit for a special event) and the left-overs are crowding your space making you feel stifled?

If this is you, I encourage you to start weeding. Simplify your choices and significantly lower your stress. If you have attempted to do this many times and yet you struggle with getting rid of a few “favorite” items (even though you do not wear them!) I have a great new trick to help you with that. I will be sharing this tip as an introduction to my new blog-day, so be watching for future Confident Beauty Blogs on Saturdays. See you in a few days!
