Removing the Tags from the Garments of Your Identity

The blind passion between Romeo and Juliet may have lead to tragedy, but this famous quote from William Shakespeare’s beautiful play made a valid point.

Yes, we may be a product or our heritage, highly influenced by our environment and persuaded by our temperament, but the truth is: there are times in life when it is appropriate to remove the tags from the garments of our identity.

While it is wise to read the label on a blouse you wish to purchase, once you know what it is made of and how to care for it, does it really matter anymore what size it is or what percentage of the fibers are cotton or linen?

Memories can be like labels:

  • The stories of how you were a “mistake” scratch at your desire for significance.
  • Your parents disappointment when you messed up make you feel ashamed.
  • The time your brother called you ugly still taunts your confidence.
  • The way the girls in the cafeteria “sized you up” still gets under your skin.
  • The relationships that went bad and left you feeling used, neglected or forgotten.

The things done to us, words spoken to us–or about us–might wear on the fabric of who we are, but they do not define us. If they are no longer helpful, perhaps it’s time we rip them off!

Juliet did not see Romeo for who others said he was, and her love for him gave him strength to renounce the labels he had been given so that he could pursue his dream… even to the point of giving up his life for what he desired.

Sometimes all we need is just one affirmation to change who we are.

Are there any annoying labels irritating you and robbing you of the confidence you need to pursue your dreams? Perhaps the wisdom of Psalms 45:11 would be like the words of Juliet to you: “Listen to me, O royal daughter; take to heart what I say: forget your people and your family far away. For your royal husband delights in your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.”
