When Beauty Triggers Ugly

By definition, an Ingénue (pronounced: änjəˌno͞o) is an innocent or unsophisticated young woman, especially one in a play or film. The Ingénue Image Identity is the Delicate Beauty. She typically has tight skin, a petite figure, softly feminine facial features and a sweet, gentle voice. Ingénues are almost always assumed younger than they are. Also, because of their youthful and innocent appearance these girls are often assumed naive or inexperienced–even by those under the service of her profession. An Ingénue doctor, for example, may not get the respect she deserves because other’s assume she is too young to have any experience.

This, of course, is quite frustrating and the most predominate Confidence Conflict this girl faces. No one can change her physical stature. Sure, the Delicate Beauty can try to look older by wearing heels and dressing all sophisticated, but then she only looks like a little girl playing dress up.

Imagine a young girl giggling with glee without a care in the world as she twirls around in her beautiful dress-up clothes trying to engage her daddy.

The enthusiastic joy of a carefree spirit is absolutely captivating. It invites others to be free to enjoy life as well. That carefree, innocent nature is actually the truest heart of the Ingénue–and one of  the Ingénue’s greatest attributes. People want to be around such beautiful joy–unless freedom and fun triggers something ugly in them.

Jennifer Lawrence, a strong and sweet Ingénue

Grouchy people don’t hesitate to squelch the joy of someone they feel they have power over. Because of her her dainty physique, the Ingénue is an easy target for big bullies. Although she is much stronger than she looks, she does have a tender heart and if she accepts the injustice done to her as if she deserved it, she may easily lose all confidence in herself and allow her true heart to be shattered with rejection.

When I first started doing image assessments I had a hard time unveiling the Ingénue Img.ID because when her heart is shattered, her personal preferences are often all over the place. I used to think this style was just indecisive, but soon figured out that it’s not that they don’t know what they want, in reality, they simply like everything. And everyone.

No wonder the wounds inflicted on her heart cut so deeply! Her non-judgmental and easy going nature has a hard time believing that others could possibly be cruel.

It must be her fault.

The way you respond to being mistreated is a big indicator of your Img.ID:

C: Don’t take it (The Classic)

N: Let it go (To the Natural)

D: Cry out to friends (The Dramatic)

I: Punish yourself (The Ingénue)

R: Shut down (The Romantic)

G: Fight back (The Gamine)

For whatever reason, the  Ingénue is inclined to turn on herself just as the big bullies do. Fighting with others is just not in her nature, so instead of fighting her confidence conflict, she punishes herself for causing conflict. Her self-inflicted wounds may cause her compulsions, addictions, weight issues or emotional problems. They may look like crazy outfits, tattoos, scars or piercings, but when you get right down to the real Image Issue, she just wants to be free and fun without being treated like a child.

If you are frustrated with being mistreated and disrespected, I encourage you to go back to your true self. Don’t stuff or laugh off the pain but perhaps it’s time to laugh it out. Let that free spirit come alive again. Don’t guard your heart by making yourself unapproachable. Instead, choose your relationships wisely. Be your true self with those who you can trust, and let the big bullies enjoy their grouchiness without you.

One way to get others to take you more seriously is dressing true to your heart. You are a strong woman in a delicate frame. Don’t let your free, fun spirit be overpowered by people and do not let your beauty be overpowered by heavy, stiff, strong outfits. Your spirit is soft and sweet, your attitude is free and flexible, so should your clothing be. When your attire shows that you are fine with being petite, others will be too. You BE you because God knows, this world needs more hearts like yours!

  1. Hi,
Another great article. A question…what do you mean by “tight skin”. Do you mean slim?

    1. Great question, Monica. An Inguéne’s skin is typically soft and smooth even when it ages and sags, her wrinkles appear “tight” and clear versus dry, textured or crape-like.

  2. Catrina,

This post was just what I needed to read. You helped me put thoughts and feelings I’ve been struggling with into words. Thank you for writing. May Christ bless you as you continue to point us to Him. 🙂

    1. E, I’m glad this helped. My heart breaks for all the ways we misunderstand each other. Ingénues have a head start on this challenge because their physical stature is so delicate but their personality is so strong. From the get-go they have a conflict going on.
Until they understand themselves and find the love and grace of God. Then their strong and gentle nature is a beautiful example of the power and tenderness of their Creator.
